Themistocles Protopsaltis, MD
Dr. Protopsaltis is a nationally and internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine and peripheral nerve surgery. With a longstanding passion for anatomy and neurology, he gravitated toward orthopedic surgery for its ability to restore movement and function through advanced surgical techniques. His clinical expertise spans cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal deformities in both adults and children, as well as degenerative spine conditions and minimally invasive, robotic-assisted procedures. As Chief of NYU Langone’s Division of Spine Surgery, he emphasizes compassionate, patient-centered care and fosters these values throughout his team.
In addition to his work in complex spinal surgery, Dr. Protopsaltis plays an integral role in NYU Langone’s adult and pediatric brachial plexus surgery program. His dual training in spine and peripheral nerve disorders uniquely positions him to treat patients with severe nerve injuries affecting upper limb function. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, he helps deliver comprehensive care for brachial plexus injuries, drawing on both microsurgical expertise and a deep understanding of neuroanatomy to improve outcomes and quality of life for his patients.
