In the Field

Live through these experiences and learn some valuable lessons.

Redefining the Management of Fuchs Dystrophy

Since its introduction in the United States in the mid-2010s, Descemet stripping only (DSO) has revolutionized the surgical management of Fuchs dystrophy. Although similar procedures were originally explored in the 1950s and for some time after, these met with little success.

The current technique—pioneered in the United States by Kathryn A. Colby, MD, PhD, the Elisabeth J. Cohen, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine—involves removal of the diseased endothelium and mound-shaped aggregates, known as guttae, without the need for a donor graft.

NYU Langone Convenes World’s Experts on Bionic Reconstruction

From early on in his career, Jacques Hacquebord, MD, performed major reconstructive work on patients at NYC Health +
Hospitals/Bellevue, including many with hand and arm amputations. Caring for these patients introduced him to the fascinating
world of prosthetic devices. Working with occupational therapists, mental health experts, and those who make and fit artificial
limbs, known as prosthetists, he saw a field brimming with potential.

Bridging the Gap Between Hand Surgery and Partial Hand Prostheses

How many times have we, as therapists, prosthetists, and rehabilitation nurses, encountered a traumatic hand injury where the heroic efforts of a skilled microvascular hand surgeon saved the hand? Yet what does it mean to “save” a hand following many months of reconstructive procedures that may include replantation, deepening a web space, a free flap, pedicle flap, debulking, or toe-to-hand transfer?

Brachial Plexus Surgery Treats an Infant’s Erb’s Palsy

A pediatric patient with Erb’s palsy experienced a remarkable recovery after specialists at NYU Langone Health teamed up to perform early microsurgical reconstruction and intensive occupational therapy. The patient first presented to the pediatric orthopedic hand surgery clinic at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital for evaluation of her right upper extremity by Andrew E. Price, MD and Jacques H. Hacquebord, MD, attending surgeons on the case.

How a Sculptor’s Life Was Transformed After an Unexpected Accident

Hands and fingers are tools people use every day, whether it is to grab a cup or open a door. This is even more true for a sculptor who uses their hands to make art. John Powers, a sculptor in New York’s Hudson Valley, shares how his life was changed after an accident in his workshop.

Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

This minimally invasive surgery involves releasing the band of tissue around the wrist, to reduce pressure on the median nerve and relieve the symptoms of carpal tunnel. As you’ll see in the video, the technique uses small cuts and minuscule surgical instruments.

Replantation Surgery: Are we progressing or regressing?

The first successful digit replantation was reported in 1965 and accepted enthusiastically by hand surgeons. The decade that immediately followed saw a surge of interest in this complex surgery, fueling significant improvements in success rates and the rise of hand and microsurgeons who were highly proficient in replantation.
