Discover Independence, Freedom, and Mobility, with Osseointegration
About
The osseointegration program is the gateway to a new world of mobility and independence. This revolutionary approach to prosthetic attachment represents a giant leap forward in enhancing the lives of amputees.
Transfemoral Osseointegration
For patients with above knee amputations, the implant can be osseointegrated above the knee into the femur bone.
Transtibial Osseointegration
The knee is preserved and the tibia is utilized to anchor the implant, providing for more limb preservation and prosthetic control and function.
Transhumeral Osseointegration
The implant is anchored into the humerus bone in the upper arm, preserving shoulder function
Transradial Osseointegration
With the implant osseointegrated into the radius and/or ulna, more of the arm can be preserved, including the elbow, which gives way for better function and control over a prosthesis.
Digit Osseointegration
This is the most recent advancement in osseointegration and is a burgeoning field. It promises reconstruction of digit level amputations and the ability to regain function that was previously only dreamed of.
The Center offers patients the opportunity to experience the future of prosthetic technology through Two-Stage Osseointegration. This innovative approach empowers individuals to embark on a journey towards newfound mobility, independence, and a more active lifestyle.
Why Two-Stage Osseointegration
Optimized Functionality
Two-Stage Osseointegration is a groundbreaking technique that enhances the connection between the prosthesis and the body, resulting in improved stability and functionality. The procedure replaces the use of a traditional socket, eliminating socket-related discomfort and limitations.
A Customized Fit
A highly personalized approach ensures a precise fit for each patient, promoting comfort, confidence, and an active lifestyle.
Advanced Surgical Expertise
Highly experienced surgeons specialize in two-stage osseointegration procedures, delivering exceptional care throughout the process, from initial implant placement to final prosthesis attachment.
Accelerated Rehabilitation
This innovative method often facilitates a quicker and more efficient rehabilitation journey. The solid foundation provided by two-stage osseointegration allows patients to regain mobility more swiftly. Physical therapists work closely with patients to establish specialized rehabilitation protocols and provide 1:1 individualized training to ensure optimal recovery.
Expanded Horizons
Two-stage osseointegration goes beyond simply attaching a prosthesis. It empowers patients to pursue a wider range of physical activities and reclaim a sense of freedom previously thought unattainable.
Catering to out-of-town patients
The Center for Amputation Reconstruction recognizes the importance of convenience and accessibility for patients traveling from afar.
Telemedicine consultations
The Center offers the option of remote consultations, allowing patients to receive expert care from the comfort of their homes.
Accommodation and travel resources
A list of recommended hotels and parking information is available to streamline the visit for traveling patients.
Prioritizing Patient Comfort
The Center prioritizes both patient health and comfort. Whether patients opt for in-person or remote care, a seamless experience is designed to cater to their individual needs.
Focus on Accessibility
The Center for Amputation Reconstruction strives to make healthcare accessible and convenient for visitors from all locations.
What to expect after OI surgery
Osseointegration surgery is a complex procedure aiming to improve prosthetic attachment to the body. While individual experiences may vary, depending on the individual and the type of prosthetic limb, here’s a general overview of the post-operative process:
Initial Recovery Period
Discomfort, swelling, and bruising around the surgical site are expected. Pain management will be a part of the recovery plan and pain relief options will be provided by the healthcare team.
Follow-Up Appointments
Regular appointments are crucial to monitor healing, ensure proper integration, and adjust the prosthetic limb as needed.
Prosthetic Fitting and Adjustments
After a healing period to allow the implant to integrate with the bone, the surgeon will determine if the osseointegration was successful. At this stage, the prosthetic limb will be attached. Expect adjustments to achieve optimal fit and function. It may take multiple fittings to optimize comfort and performance.
Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy
Rehabilitation is a critical aspect of recovery. A customized rehabilitation program will be designed to help patients regain strength, balance, and mobility. This tailored program allows them to adapt to their new prosthetic limb and use it effectively.
Recovery Timeline
Full recovery varies significantly. Patience and persistence are crucial throughout the process. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life and regain as much independence as possible.
Long-Term Maintenance
Regular follow-up appointments and maintenance of the osseointegrated implant and prosthetic limb are essential for continued success. This may include the occasional adjustments or replacements of prosthetic components over time, as wear and tear may occur.
Support and Education
The healthcare team will provide ongoing support and guidance throughout the recovery journey, addressing any questions or concerns patients may have.
Remember that the specific experience can vary, and open communication is key to a successful recovery and improved quality of life.
